The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Knife River have completed 2023 pavement preservation work on two sections of Big Mountain Road north of Whitefish.

Traffic control has been removed. Thank you for your patience throughout construction.

A pavement overlay will occur in 2024, and updates will be provided as the construction start date approaches. Please see the green section on the linked below map for reference.

Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Knife River announce a pavement preservation project north of Whitefish on Big Mountain Road. The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of the roadway. Initial work is anticipated to begin on August 7 and extend through Labor Day. Work will pause for the winter, resuming in the summer of 2024.

On Monday, August 7, crews are scheduled to begin digging out the top layer on a short stretch of Big Mountain Road south of Ptarmigan Road. This area of the roadway has been identified as needing additional structural support.

Another small portion of pavement, just east of Ptarmigan Road, will be dug out and replaced later this year. Next summer, a pavement overlay will occur on a large portion of Big Mountain Road from Smith Drive to north of Glades Drive. More details will be provided as 2024 work approaches. All work is dependent on weather and other factors.

Traffic control will be in place. Throughout construction, travelers can expect delays and single-lane traffic.

Big Sky Public Relations will provide project updates to keep the public engaged throughout construction.
