Montana Department of
Transportation Proposes Improvements to Higgins Avenue Bridge in
Missoula

MISSOULA The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT)
would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal to
rehabilitate the Higgins Avenue Bridge over the Clark Fork River.

The project will extend the life of the bridge in a cost-effective
manner by repairing or replacing the deteriorated elements of the
bridge and provide improved accommodations for bicycle and pedestrian
use on the bridge. The project is located within the city limits of
Missoula on Higgins Avenue, at reference post 0.2, between the Front
Street and 3rd Street West intersections.

Proposed rehabilitation
work includes replacing the bridge deck, repair and spot painting of
the steel superstructure, replacing bearings, minor work on the
concrete substructure units, and replacing the lighting. Proposed
pedestrian and bicycle improvements include widening the bridge to
the west side to provide for wider pedestrian and bicycle facilities
on both sides of the bridge.

New right-of-way may be necessary to
accommodate the bridge widening. Utility relocations will likely be
required. The project schedule has not been determined.
