Montana Department
of Transportation Proposes Resurfacing Project for Montana Secondary
Highway 359

WHITEHALL  The Montana Department of Transportation
(MDT) would like to notify the public and seek comments on a proposal
to resurface about 15.9 miles of Montana Secondary Highway 359
(S-359) east of Whitehall through Cardwell in Jefferson and Madison

The project begins approximately 1.2 miles northwest of
Cardwell at the junction with State Route 69 and S-359 at reference
post 0.0 and extends southeast for 15.9 miles, ending at the junction
with U.S. 287 approximately 1 mile north of Harrison at reference
post 15.9.

Proposed work from reference post 0.0 to reference post
6.42 will consist of cold milling the full width of the existing
surface and applying a new overlay. The project will include a seal
and cover (chip seal) from reference post 0.0 to reference post 15.9.
The project will include bridge work, upgraded pavement marking,
signage and guardrail. 

The purpose of the project is to extend the
service life of the roadway, provide additional skid resistance and
take a cost-effective action to preserve and maintain the existing

The project is currently outside of the Tentative
Construction Plan. Project construction will depend on completion of
all project development activities and availability of funding. No
new right-of-way or utility relocations will be needed.
