Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Ti-Zack Concrete are preparing to rehabilitate 6th Street NW and SW in Great Falls, a critical roadway serving thousands of commuters, residents, and businesses every day. This route has faced significant wear and tear, leading to cracking, uneven surfaces, and maintenance challenges.
As part of the 6th Street NW/SW Roadway Resurfacing project, crews will remove and replace concrete surfacing from 10th Avenue South to American Avenue. In addition, concrete surfacing will be repaired on 6th Street SW from American Avenue to Central Avenue West, on Fox Farm Road from Alder Drive to 10th Avenue South, and on 6th Street NW from Central Avenue West to the NW Bypass.
This project will enhance the long-term durability of the roadway by completely replacing worn-out pavement with new concrete and upgrading the surrounding infrastructure to meet current safety standards. To extend the life of the roadway, some areas will also see targeted concrete repairs, joint sealing, and surface grinding to help extend the pavement’s lifespan and minimize maintenance costs.
Improvements to curbs, gutters, and medians will enhance drainage and help maintain the integrity of the road surface. As needed, sidewalks will be upgraded to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Additionally, this project will include a small amount of storm drain work.
As part of the project, a gas main will be replaced along 6th Street SW while the road is under construction.

Impacts to the Public
Temporary lane closures and detours will be necessary for this project to enable crews to work safely and efficiently. Traffic may occasionally be limited to one lane in each direction.
Maintaining access to businesses and residences will remain a priority. Some properties may experience temporary detours or alternate access routes, but MDT and the project team will coordinate with property owners to minimize disruptions.
Drivers should expect slower speeds and possible delays in the work zone. During peak construction, delays of up to 15 minutes may occur. We encourage you to allow extra travel time to ensure a smooth journey. MDT will provide regular updates as construction progresses.
Project Timeline
Construction is scheduled to begin in April 2025 and be completed this fall. However, this timeline could change due to weather and other unforeseen factors.
