The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Ti-Zack Concrete are continuing work on the 6th Street NW/SW Roadway Resurfacing project in Great Falls.
As of today, the southbound lanes of 6th Street SW between 10th Avenue South and 10th Avenue Southwest are temporarily closed. Northbound travel in this section of the project has reopened.
During the southbound closure:
- All southbound traffic will be detoured. Drivers should use Central Avenue West to connect to Interstate 15 (I-15) or seek alternate routes for traveling south across the Sun River.
- Northbound travel will remain open, with local access maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency services.
- Businesses remain open and accessible via signed detours. Southbound access is available until the intersection with 10th Avenue Southwest.
This closure is expected to last approximately 2 weeks, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Crews may work 7 days a week to stay on schedule. Drivers should plan for delays and proceed with caution in the work zones.
Elsewhere in the corridor:
- Surface grinding is ongoing between American Avenue and the Northwest Bypass, requiring intermittent single-lane northbound closures.
- Joint sealing work may also take place in this area using mobile single-lane closures.
Drivers should expect delays, watch for signage and equipment, and proceed with caution throughout the corridor.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its construction partner, Ti-Zack Concrete, are continuing work on the 6th Street NW/SW Roadway Resurfacing project. Beginning Monday, August 4, 6th Street SW will be closed to southbound traffic between 10th Avenue South and 10th Avenue Southwest to allow crews to rebuild a section of the roadway.
This follows the completion of northbound work, which required a similar, temporary closure. To safely and efficiently complete construction, MDT is using directional closures to limit traffic exposure in active work zones.
During the southbound closure:
- All southbound traffic will be detoured. Drivers should use Central Avenue West to connect to Interstate 15 (I-15) or seek alternate routes for traveling south across the Sun River.
- Northbound traffic will reopen, and local access will be maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency responders.
- Nearby businesses remain open and accessible via detours, and 6th Street SW southbound is accessible until the intersection with 10th Avenue Southwest.
This closure is expected to last approximately 2 weeks, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Crews may work 7 days a week to stay on schedule. Drivers should expect delays and plan ahead.
MDT is committed to ensuring safety and access throughout the project and appreciates the traveling public’s patience during construction.
July 28, 2025
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Ti-Zack Concrete are preparing to implement a significant traffic change as part of the 6th Street NW/SW Roadway Resurfacing project.
Starting today, the northbound lanes of 6th Street SW between 10th Avenue South and 10th Avenue Southwest will be temporarily closed. This closure will remain in place to facilitate the removal and replacement of the concrete surface on the northbound side of the road. All northbound traffic will be detoured via 10th Avenue South to Interstate 15 or other alternate routes.
While the northbound lanes are closed, southbound travel will remain open, with local access maintained for residents, businesses, and emergency responders.
To enable the full northbound closure, changes are planned at the intersection of 6th Street SW and 10th Avenue South:
- The outside westbound through lane and the westbound right-turn lane on 10th Avenue South will be closed to accommodate construction staging and access.
- On the eastbound side of 10th Avenue South, the leftmost lane will also be closed.
On Fox Farm Road, the current traffic control setup will remain in place, but vehicles can turn left or right only; through traffic is not permitted.
Elsewhere along the corridor, crews may continue surface grinding operations between American Avenue and Central Avenue West, requiring intermittent southbound single-lane closures. Joint sealing work may also be conducted in this area, utilizing mobile single-lane closures.
No additional work is currently planned on Fox Farm Road or 6th Street NW.
The northbound closure on 6th Street SW is expected to last approximately 2 weeks, weather and other unforeseen conditions permitting. Once the northbound lanes reopen, this same section of road will temporarily close to southbound traffic for an estimated 2-week period. Crews may work up to 7 days a week to maintain their schedule. Drivers should plan for delays and proceed with caution through the area.

Crews are installing new concrete medians in the section of the corridor undergoing full reconstruction.
Grinding operations are also underway between American Avenue and Central Avenue West to smooth the recently repaired roadway surface. This work will involve shifting single-lane closures in both directions as crews progress through each lane.
Repair work between American Avenue and the Northwest Bypass is complete, with only grinding, pavement markings, and final finishing tasks remaining in that area.
On Fox Farm Road, repairs are ongoing. Drivers should expect single-lane travel with traffic control shifting as work progresses. Please drive with caution and watch for crews, equipment, and signage throughout the work zone.

This work involves slow-moving equipment in the closed, inside lanes and will also result in shifting lane restrictions in the repair-only section of the project from American Avenue to Central Avenue West. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert through this stretch of the corridor.
Work continues to form and pour new concrete medians in the reconstructed section of the project. Roadway repairs between Central Avenue West and the Northwest Bypass are also ongoing.
