Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Lines Inc. are upgrading traffic signals at two intersections in Anaconda and one in Deer Lodge. The two intersections in Anaconda are located at Park Avenue/Main Street and at Commercial Avenue/Main Street. The intersection in Deer Lodge is located at Main Street and Milwaukee Avenue. The project also includes rehabilitating sections of Montana Highway 1 (MT 1) in Anaconda and Main Street in Deer Lodge.

Planned Improvements
The planned improvements will enhance safety features for pedestrians and vehicles by upgrading curb ramps and installing push-button signals that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. In addition, the pavement rehabilitation work planned for MT 1 in Anaconda and Main Street in Deer Lodge will extend the service life of the roadway.
Work in Deer Lodge includes:
- Removing and replacing the traffic signal at the intersection of Main Street and Milwaukee Avenue with an updated push-button signal for pedestrians
- Upgrading curb ramps to meet current ADA guidelines
- Crack sealing the pavement and adding a seal and cover (chip seal) on Main Street
- Restriping Main Street with new pavement markings to add a center turn lane between California Avenue and Texas Avenue
Work in Anaconda includes:
- Removing and replacing the Main Street traffic signals at the intersections of Park Avenue and Commercial Street with updated push-button signals for pedestrians
- Upgrading curb ramps to meet current ADA guidelines
- Adding a chip seal and updating pavement markings on MT 1 between Polk Street and North Cable Road
What to expect during construction?
For the safety of the public and construction crews, MDT encourages motorists to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, slow down, and use caution when traveling through work zones.
- Intersection sidewalks will be closed, and pedestrians will be detoured
- Flaggers and/or temporary signals will direct traffic at times
- Temporary lane closures
- Speed limits will be reduced
- On-street parking will be briefly disrupted during pavement work
- Wide loads may be restricted at times. Visit 511mt.net for the most up-to-date information on restrictions
- Work will take place during daylight hours
Stay Informed
MDT will notify the public about traffic and construction impacts through the project website, local media, social media, and email and text notifications. See the side panel to sign up for construction updates.
