Project Update
The Belgrade - Intersection Improvements project is progressing from the alternatives analysis phase into the design phase.
After evaluating multiple options for the intersection of Broadway and Main Street (currently a four-way stop), MDT, with the city of Belgrade, has selected the roundabout alternative to enhance safety and improve traffic flow. MDT and its consultant, DOWL, are working with the city of Belgrade to coordinate with surrounding land and business owners to discuss potential project impacts.
Other improvements will include upgrading the existing traffic signals by adding flashing yellow arrows and retroreflective backplates at the following intersections:
- Amsterdam Road with Thorpe Road.
- Significant utility infrastructure poses a challenge to the planned widening at Thorpe Road. To accommodate these utilities, the road alignment will shift slightly to the west. MDT and DOWL will continue to coordinate with land and businesses owners along the project corridor.
- Amsterdam Road with Interstate 90 (I-90) eastbound ramps.
- Jackrabbit Lane with I-90 westbound ramps.
- Amsterdam Road and Jackrabbit Lane.
- This intersection has been separated from this project to be accelerated. It will bid in the spring of 2025.
Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its consultant, DOWL, are designing the Belgrade - Intersection Improvements project. The Belgrade - Intersection Improvements project will enhance intersection safety features in Belgrade along Jackrabbit Lane and Amsterdam Road. This project will improve traffic operations and pedestrian accessibility to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) design standards. Improvements will include upgrading the existing traffic signals by adding flashing yellow arrows and retroreflective backplates at the following intersections:
- Amsterdam Road with Thorpe Road.
- Amsterdam Road with Interstate 90 (I-90) eastbound ramps.
- Jackrabbit Lane with I-90 westbound ramps.
The project reviewed both signal and roundabout options at the intersection of Broadway and Main Street. MDT and the city of Belgrade have selected a roundabout alternative for this intersection.
The west leg of the Amsterdam Road and Thorpe Road intersection will be widened to three lanes to connect to the Amsterdam Road Intersection Improvements project.

Public Involvement Opportunities
MDT hosted a public open house on June 11, 2024, at the River Rock Event Center. The project team provided a general overview of the project and answered questions from members of the public. As the project design progresses, there will be more opportunities for the public to connect with project team.
