Project Overview

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner Knife River will continue work on the Big Mountain Road Pavement Preservation project north of Whitefish this summer. The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of the roadway. Initial work began on August 7, 2023, and is anticipated to resume in early June. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.

In 2023, crews dug out the top layer of two sections on Big Mountain Road, near Ptarmigan Road. These areas of roadway were identified as needing additional structural support.

This summer, crews will complete pavement overlay activities and additional dig out operations throughout the project area. All work will occur on Big Mountain Road between the intersections with Smith Drive and Glades Drive.

Pavement overlay is a road maintenance technique that involves applying a new layer of asphalt over the existing pavement. Dig outs are localized repairs that involve digging out a segment of damaged pavement identified as needing additional structural support. Additional work will include grading and repairing select areas of the roadway to extend its service life.

Traffic control will be in place and delays of up to 15 minutes are expected. Throughout construction, travelers can expect reduced speeds and single-lane traffic directed by temporary traffic lights throughout the project area. Please follow all posted signage and watch for workers and equipment.

Big Sky Public Relations will provide project updates to keep the public engaged throughout construction.
