Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Montana Materials and Construction will apply a seal and cover (scrub seal) to approximately 11 miles of Interstate 15 (I-15) near Helena. Additionally, this project will see a crack seal applied to six bridges along mainline I-15. Several interchange ramps will also receive a scrub seal as part of this project.

This project begins near the Lewis and Clark and Jefferson County boundary south of the South Helena Interchange (Exit 190) and ends near the Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200).
The purpose of this project is to extend the service life of this section of roadway and the bridges and interchange ramps within its boundaries. The pavement is showing signs of deterioration, and the scrub seal will rejuvenate the existing asphalt and provide a new layer of protection.
Improvements Include:
- Applying a scrub seal on the I-15 mainline and interchange ramps at Exit 190, Exit 192, Exit 193, and Exit 194
- Applying a scrub seal on the northbound on-ramp and southbound off-ramp of the Lincoln Road Interchange (Exit 200)
- Applying a crack seal on the I-15 bridges over Boulder Avenue, Tenmile Creek, and Sierra Road
- Adding new pavement markings
Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2025 and be completed in the fall.
What to expect during construction
- Traffic will be reduced to one lane
- Speed limits will be reduced
- Motorcyclists should consider alternate routes
- Interchange ramps will be temporarily closed when scrub seal is being applied
- Wide loads may be restricted at times

Why is the project needed?
MDT identified this stretch of interstate as being worn down and in need of repairs. The pavement is showing signs of deterioration, and the scrub seal will rejuvenate the existing asphalt and provide a new layer of protection. This project will reduce the regular maintenance needed on this section of roadway and allow it to continue servicing the traveling public.
Stay Informed During Construction
MDT will notify the public about traffic impacts and work activities through the project website, local media, mailings, social media, and email and text notifications during construction.
Current construction information and road conditions can be found on the MDT Travel Info App.
