The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are pausing construction on Interstate 15 (I-15) near Wolf Creek for the winter season.
During this construction season, crews removed approximately two feet of degraded roadway from the northbound lanes of I-15. Other work completed in 2024 included adding roadside markers, replacing right-of-way fencing and cattle guards, adding new pavement markings, lining and repairing I-15 culverts, improving erosion control features, storm drainage upgrades in Wolf Creek, updating curb ramps in Wolf creek, and upgrading concrete barrier rails, metal guardrail, and signage.
Construction will resume in 2025 when crews return to apply a seal and cover (chip seal) on the project area.
MDT and Riverside Contracting would like to thank the public for their patience during construction this season.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. have reopened the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 (I-15) through Wolf Creek. These lanes were closed earlier this spring and traffic was crossed over to the southbound lanes while crews worked to rehabilitate the northbound lanes.
During this construction season, crews removed and replaced approximately two feet of degraded roadway material from the northbound lanes of I-15.
Crews still have minor work left to complete this season. Crews will work up until November 15 or until weather no longer permits.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are closing Interstate 15 (I-15) Exit 226 northbound on- and off-ramps in Wolf Creek this week for guardrail installation.
On Wednesday, October 16, crews will be closing the northbound Exit 226 off-ramp. During this time, those seeking to enter Wolf Creek from northbound I-15 are recommended to use the Exit 228 Augusta interchange to enter southbound I-15 and use Exit 226 southbound to enter Wolf Creek.
On Thursday, October 17, crews will be closing the Exit 226 northbound on-ramp. During this time, those in Wolf Creek looking to enter I-15 northbound are recommended to travel to Craig to enter the interstate.
Both closures and guardrail installation are dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors. These closures are anticipated to last several hours, but less than a full day.
Motorists should expect:
- Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
- Both north and southbound traffic will travel on the same side of I-15.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. plan to begin asphalt paving on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 (I-15) the week of September 9.
Crews will begin paving on the north end of the project near the Augusta Interchange and work their way south to the I-15 Wolf Creek bridge. Once this section is complete, crews will continue working their way south from the bridge. This work is anticipated to take approximately two weeks to complete, weather and other factors permitting.
During this work, motorists should anticipate periodic ramp closures on the northbound side of I-15 when crews are paving past ramps and while asphalt cures. These closures will generally only last a couple of hours.
Motorists should expect:
- Closure of the I-15 southbound on-ramp at Exit 226 (Wolf Creek).

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. plan to close the Interstate 15 (I-15) Wolf Creek Interchange (Exit 226) southbound on-ramp on Tuesday, September 3 and the I-15 Augusta/Choteau Interchange (Exit 228) southbound off-ramp on Wednesday, September 4, weather and other factors permitting. Both ramps are expected to be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., while crews install cattle guards.
Southbound motorists leaving Wolf Creek will need to use Recreation Road to access I-15 at Exit 219 (Spring Gulch).
I-15 southbound motorists wanting to travel on US Highway 287 (US 287) towards Augusta will need to take Exit 226 (Wolf Creek), return to I-15 traveling north, then take the northbound off-ramp at Exit 228 (Augusta/Choteau).
LABOR DAY: Crews will pause construction activities for the Labor Day weekend by 3 p.m. on Friday, August 30 and will resume on Tuesday, September 3.

Northbound motorists wanting to access Wolf Creek will need to use the I-15 Augusta/Choteau Interchange (Exit 228), then return to I-15 and proceed southbound to Exit 226.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. crews plan to begin asphalt milling in Wolf Creek the week of August 12, weather and other factors permitting. Crews will then prepare for storm drain installation once milling is completed.
MDT and Riverside Contracting encourage motorists to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, slow down, and use caution through the work zone. Motorists can expect single lane traffic on Interstate 15 (I-15), flaggers or temporary signals to direct traffic, reduced speed limits, and intermittent lane closures.
MDT anticipates that beginning Monday, August 19, Walsh Street, the road under I-15 in Wolf Creek, will be closed for approximately one week to allow crews to safely install the storm drainage system. The storm drain requires a 12-foot-deep trench to be dug that requires the closure. During this time, traffic needing to access Wolf Creek will need to first travel to Craig and then use either the Frontage Road or the Augusta Interchange to travel to Wolf Creek.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are continuing work on Interstate 15 (I-15) through Wolf Creek.
Crews will pause construction by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3. No work will take place from July 4 through July 7. Crews will return the following Monday, July 8.
Additionally, no wide-load escorting will take place from July 4 through July 7. Wide load escorting will resume on July 8.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. plan to close the Interstate 15 (I-15) ramps at the Augusta Interchange (Exit 287) periodically during the week of June 10, weather and other factors permitting.
These periodic closures will allow crews to complete work on the ramps and on the interstate in front of the ramps. The ramp closures are not anticipated to occur at the same time.
Please watch for detour signs around the interchange to direct you to your destination. Exit 226 in Wolf Creek can be used to change the direction you are traveling on I-15.

During this closure, MDT recommends northbound I-15 travelers headed to Wolf Creek proceed north to Exit-228 Augusta/Choteau Interchange, cross over, and proceed to the southbound Exit 226 Wolf Creek ramp for access.
This closures is anticipated to last two days and the ramp is anticipated to be closed from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are resuming construction on the I-15 Wolf Creek North and South project for the 2024 construction season the week of April 1. This year, crews will begin work on the northbound lanes of Interstate 15 (I-15).
Planned improvements include:
- Removing approximately two feet of degraded roadway material and paving a new driving surface.
- Upgrading concrete barrier rails, metal guardrails, and signage.
- Adding road delineators (roadside markers) on inside curves.
- Improving erosion control features.
- Resurfacing adjacent ramps and crossroads in the Wolf Creek area.
- Upgrading curb ramps on Walsh Street between Main Street and Recreation Road in Wolf Creek.
- Upgrading storm drainage in the town of Wolf Creek.

No traffic control is in place. Crews will return in spring 2024 to begin work on the northbound lanes of I 15.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. will close the southbound Interstate 15 (I 15) Wolf Creek on- and off-ramps (Exit 226) between 9 a.m. and noon on Monday, September 25.
MDT recommends that motorists take Recreation Road/Craig Frontage Road (Exit 234) in Craig to access Wolf Creek during this time frame. Those in Wolf Creek wanting to enter I 15 southbound should take Recreation Road south during this time.
September 1, 2023
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. are expecting to close the Interstate 15 (I 15) Augusta Interchange (Exit 228) southbound ramps on September 5, and the Wolf Creek Interchange (Exit 226) southbound ramps on September 6 to assist crews in laying gravel.
On Tuesday, September 5, the Exit 228 southbound off-ramp to Augusta will be closed from 6 a.m. to Noon. The Exit 228 southbound on-ramp will be closed from Noon to 7 p.m., weather permitting.
On Wednesday, September 6, the Exit 226 southbound off-ramp to Wolf Creek will be closed from 6 a.m. to Noon. The Exit 226 southbound on-ramp will be closed from Noon to 7 p.m., weather permitting.
MDT recommends seeking alternative routes to access Augusta, Wolf Creek, or southbound I 15 during these closures. Motorists can use the northbound Exit 228 off-ramp to travel to Augusta or use Recreation Road to access Wolf Creek and southbound I 15 during the closures.
Work will be paused in observance of the Labor Day holiday from Saturday, September 2 through Monday, September 4, with crews returning September 5.

MDT recommends southbound travelers headed to Wolf Creek take Exit 234 in Craig and travel along the Craig Frontage Road/Recreation Road to access Wolf Creek.

Those who need to access Exit 228 should continue traveling southbound on I 15, use Exit 226 in Wolf Creek to access I 15 northbound, and take the northbound Exit 228 ramp toward Augusta.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting Inc. will be closing Exit 226 into Wolf Creek on southbound Interstate 15 (I 15) from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 11. This closure will allow the contractor time to safely build a temporary ramp.
Those traveling on southbound I 15 who need to access Wolf Creek during this time frame will be detoured at Exit 234 in Craig. As a reminder, detour signage will be in place.
June 30, 2023
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting are continuing work to remove roadway material on southbound Interstate 15 (I 15) near Wolf Creek. Asphalt milling crews plan to continue milling southbound I 15 this July. Excavation crews are in the process of removing material below the road surface.
No work will take place between June 30 and July 5. Wide load escorting will pause from July 1 until the morning of July 5. Traffic on the northbound lanes will remain open through the holiday weekend.
June 7, 2023
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting have extended the intermittent closure period on Interstate 15 (I 15) due to the high number of wide loads traveling through the project area each day.
Motorists can now expect intermittent closures on I 15 between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Friday. During this time frame, staged wide loads will be escorted through the project area.
Though there is no designated detour as part of this project, MDT recommends seeking an alternative route if you need to travel through Wolf Creek during this time frame.

Following this change, both north and southbound traffic will travel on the northbound side of the interstate through the project area.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Riverside Contracting anticipate beginning work on the I 15 Wolf Creek North and South project the week of April 17. This project will see approximately 7 miles of Interstate 15 (I 15) near Wolf Creek resurfaced.
Crews will begin preparations to cross all traffic over to the northbound lanes in the coming weeks. This will create wider traffic lanes during construction, which will allow traffic to shift closer towards the shoulder while crossed over. Northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane while crossovers are being built.
Riverside Contracting anticipates beginning pavement removal following this work.
