The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River have completed construction on the Interstate 90 (I-90) Bozeman East project!

This project saw approximately 3 miles of I-90 in Bozeman rehabilitated and all of the ramps of the Main Street Interchange (Exit 309) resurfaced. This project began earlier this summer and was completed in one construction season.

This is the final update for this project!

Improvements completed:

  • Removed and replaced the asphalt pavement on mainline I-90 and the Exit 309 ramps.
  • Rehabilitated the bridges including bridge deck repairs, bridge deck sealing, and replacing expansion joints.
  • Added new shoulder rumble strips, signage, and upgraded guardrail.
  • Applied a seal and cover (chip seal) and final pavement markings.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River anticipate applying final epoxy paint on Friday, September 27, and Saturday, September 28, weather and other factors permitting.

This work is anticipated to be completed by the end of the day on Saturday. During painting, crews will be utilizing a mobile work zone with moving single-lane closures.

Following application of the final paint markings, work on the I-90 Bozeman East project will be complete.

What motorists should expect during construction:

  • Moving single-lane closures.
  • Reduced speed limits.

For the safety of the public and construction workers, MDT encourages motorists to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, slow down, and use caution when traveling through work zones.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River have completed paving and chip sealing operations in the project area. Starting the week of August 19, crews will begin work installing new signage and roadside delineators and removing crossovers on Interstate 90 (I-90).

This work is anticipated to take about a week to complete, weather and other factors permitting. During this work traffic will remain in a single-lane configuration through the project area.

What motorists should expect during construction:

  • Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • 18-foot width restriction at all times.
  • Flaggers or temporary signals directing traffic at times.
  • Reduced speed limits.

What's Next?

Crews will return in 30-45 days to apply final epoxy paint markings. Following application of the final paint markings, work on this project will be complete.

August 9, 2024

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River plan to begin paving the project area the week of August 12. MDT anticipates intermittent closures of the Main Street Interchange (Exit 309) ramps starting Wednesday, August 14, to allow crews to apply a seal and cover (chip seal). Only one ramp will be closed at a time.

Chip seal activities are anticipated to take three days to complete, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting.

Motorists are encouraged to use the Bear Canyon Interchange (Exit 313) and North 7th Avenue Interchange (Exit 306) as alternate routes. Allow for extra travel time if this interchange is part of your normal commute.

What motorists should expect during construction:

  • Traffic reduced to one lane in each direction.
  • Interchange ramp closure.
  • 12-foot width restriction, Wednesday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River will be closing the Exit 309 westbound off ramp on Thursday, August 8, weather and other factors permitting.

This ramp closure is anticipated to last only a few hours and will be reopened by 7 p.m.

This closure will allow crews the time necessary to apply a crack seal to the driving lane of the westbound Main Street Bridge.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River have reopened the Interstate 90 (I-90) westbound off-ramp at the Main Street Interchange (Exit 309). The closure allowed crews to safely work on the interchange bridge deck and railing.

On Tuesday, July 30, the eastbound off-ramp at the Main Street Interchange (Exit 309) is expected to be closed for guardrail installation. The westbound on-ramp is expected to be closed for guardrail installation on Wednesday, July 31. These closures are expected to each last for one day (daytime hours only). The ramp is anticipated to be closed for two weeks, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. The closure is needed to allow crews to safely work on the interchange bridge deck and railing.

Motorists traveling westbound from Livingston are encouraged to use the Bear Canyon Interchange (Exit 313) and Frontage Road during this time. Allow for extra travel time if this off-ramp is part of your normal commute.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River are continuing construction on approximately 3 miles of Interstate 90 (I-90) between the North Rouse Avenue overpass and the Fort Ellis Road overpass.

Fencing on the project is nearing completion and work on the metal bridge rail is anticipated to continue for the next few weeks.

Crews will stop work by noon on July 3 and will return on Monday, July 8. Traffic control will remain up throughout the Independence Day holiday weekend, but no work will take place.

Work is expected to be completed in late summer.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Knife River are continuing construction on approximately 3 miles of Interstate 90 (I-90) between the North Rouse Avenue overpass and the Fort Ellis Road overpass. Crews plan to begin removing and replacing the pavement on the Main Street Interchange (Exit 309) ramps the week of April 22.

Each of the ramps will be closed for approximately two days at a time to remove and replace the pavement. The ramps will not be closed simultaneously and will reopen as soon as the new pavement is safe to drive on. The ramp closures are anticipated to take two weeks to complete, weather and unforeseen factors permitting.

Crews are expected to start with the westbound on-ramp. Once work there is complete, they plan to move on to the westbound off-ramp, followed by the eastbound off-ramp, and finally the eastbound on-ramp.

On Interstate 90 (I-90), crews have begun constructing crossovers in the median. These preparations will allow all traffic to travel on the same side of I-90 while paving work is being performed on the opposite side.
