Crews will seed the shoulders and install signage this week after completing the paving last week. Once seeding and signing operations are complete, the project will pause for the winter.
Next spring, crews will return to seal and cover (chip seal) the project and apply permanent roadway markings.

In addition, the project will install snow ditches to mitigate drifting snow issues and new pedestrian facilities at 9th Street West. MDT anticipates that the project will be complete by this fall.

This week, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Wickens Construction will pause operations on the Malta South project for the winter. Traffic control has been removed. Construction updates will continue when crews return in the spring.
This past season, crews completed work on the Alkali Creek Bridge and the irrigation ditch bridge on the edge of town. In addition, alignment work and culvert installation began on US Highway 191 (US 191).
Crews will return in the spring of 2024 to rehabilitate the entire road surface on US 191, complete alignment work, and install a culvert, snow ditches to mitigate drifting snow issues, and new pedestrian facilities at 9th Street West.

This week, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Wickens Construction will continue stripping topsoil and grading along the shoulder of US Highway 191 (US 191).
The project starts approximately 9 miles south of Malta near South Alkali Creek Road and ends at the intersection of US 191 and 9th Street West.
Work will take place Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
During work hours, motorists on US 191 should expect short delays and reduced speed limits to 45 mph. MDT and Wickens Construction will maintain traffic flow but rely on you to keep roadway crews safe.

Happy Fourth of July! Construction will be paused Monday, July 3rd through Tuesday, July 4th, and will resume on Wednesday, July 5th.
