Project Overview

Gallatin County in collaboration with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), Big Sky Resort Area District, and Madison County are pleased to announce several roadway improvements along the Lone Mountain Trail/MT Highway 64 corridor. Design and construction for the project has been made possible through a nationally competitive FWHA discretionary fund opportunity called a TIGER Grant awarded to Gallatin County in 2019, as well as local funds contributed by Gallatin County, Madison County, MDT and Big Sky Resort Area District.

Sanderson Stewart out of Bozeman completed the engineering and design, and Riverside Construction out of Missoula and Billings has been awarded the construction contract. MDT updated the US 191 traffic signal in the 2021 season and Lone Mountain Land Company will complete the construction of a turn lane into the Powder Light Subdivision by late summer 2022. Utility relocations were also completed during the spring of 2022.

During construction, drivers can expect reduced speeds, lane closures and a 12-foot width restriction through the project area. Crews will be on-site Monday through Friday between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. Some Saturday work may be necessary as construction progresses. Fifteen to 20-minute delays are possible; please plan travel accordingly.

Depending upon weather conditions, construction is anticipated to be substantially completed during the 2023 season with chip sealing and final pavement markings completed in 2024.

In addition to roadway improvements, this grant will provide funding for the purchase of four motor coaches for Skyline Bus and six AWD vans for the Skyline vanpool program.
