Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is developing plans to improve approximately 13 miles of Secondary Highway 324 (S 324), beginning just north of Lemhi Pass Road, and extending south to the Montana/Idaho border. A construction year has not been determined and is dependent on project design completion and availability of funding.
The purpose of the project is to enhance safety features, improve traffic operations for motorists, upgrade drainage crossings, and extend the service life of the roadway.
Proposed improvements:
- The existing paved sections of the road will be milled and overlaid with new pavement.
- Gravel sections of the road will be reconstructed into a 24-foot-wide paved surface.
- Drainage features and culverts will be upgraded.
- New guardrail and fencing will be added.
- Snow fencing may be included at select locations.
Why is the project needed?
Long-term solutions are needed to improve the reliability and resiliency of this roadway, especially related to snow removal and road base stabilization. The proposed work will enhance safety features and extend the service life of the roadway.
Process and Schedule
This project is in the preliminary design phase and the project team is gathering the initial data and information necessary to develop design plans. The construction schedule is dependent on the completion of the project’s design plans, acquisition of right of way, and the availability of funding. The schedule will be updated as the project develops.
