Speed was listed as a contributing factor over 19,000 times in Montana crashes from 2016 through 2020. During that same period, there were 264 fatalities as a result of speeding.

A review of Montana STEP data shows that speed is the most frequently addressed traffic violation. Over 5,000 citations and warnings were issued for speed violations in FFY2021.
