Deer Lodge Area Bridges Rehabilitation
Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) plans to rehabilitate 11 bridges along the I 90 corridor between 5 and 20 miles south of Deer Lodge in Powell and Deer Lodge counties to maintain long-term traffic flow and incorporate safety improvements. Construction is scheduled to begin on April 18, 2022, weather permitting, and take approximately five months. Detailed project information can be found in this Fact Sheet, and regular updates will be posted on this website.
The surfaces on these bridges were part of the original construction of I 90 more than five decades ago. The rehabilitation and improvements are essential to extend their service life, and will include repairs to deck and substructure concrete, deck milling with a concrete overlay and crack sealing, guardrail replacements, and other upgrades.
Traffic delays during construction will be kept to a minimum. Both eastbound and westbound I 90 through Deer Lodge and Powell counties will remain open at all times, with single lane bridge closures during construction. Deer Lodge Area Bridges Rehabilitation
I90 to Anaconda MT1 Pavement Preservation
Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) will chip seal approximately 7 miles of Montana State Highway 1 (MT 1) between I 90 and Anaconda, add safety improvements and provide routine highway maintenance. Contractor Pavement Maintenance Services began the project the week of July 18, 2022. Pending weather-related delays, the expected project duration is three months in summer 2022 with the seal and cover completed in summer 2023.
Additional project details are available in the Fact Sheet. An informational mailer will be sent to local residents and businesses and project updates will be posted on this website and sent via text messages and emails.
The project will include guardrail and bridge rail improvements at the I 90 interchange and on the five bridges along the project route. The pavement preservation also will have skid-resistant features.
MDT anticipates that at least one lane of MT 1 will be open throughout the project, except for a brief one day each way closure at I 90 and MT 1 to upgrade guardrails. The exact date of the closure has not yet been determined, but once detour dates are set, the public will receive advanced notice. A detour will be in place at Gregson/Fairmont Exit 211 for westbound I 90 traffic to Anaconda, and at Warm Springs Exit 201 for eastbound I 90 traffic.
To ensure these projects meet all MDT quality and cost criteria, they have progressed through development, surveying, and design phases prior to final construction.
The public and local stakeholders will be kept informed throughout the project. As with all its road construction projects, MDT is committed to and encourages public involvement. Regular updates on construction progress will be posted on MDT's Anaconda-Deer Lodge Road & Bridges Preservation webpage under Project Updates.
