The MT 84 - East of Norris Corridor Study continues advancing. We appreciate your patience through this process.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Morrison-Maierle (MMI), is examining safety improvements for the East of Norris corridor. This study initially began due to a crash trend along Montana Highway 84 (MT 84). The findings and proposals brought forward by this study may ultimately be implemented as a future construction project, as funding becomes available.

The project team reviewed many different solution alternatives. These alternatives include carving into the landscape, flattening curves, building out into the river, as well as re-aligning the road to go around the mountains. Recently, MDT and MMI determined that the best option would be to remove a portion of rock next to MT 84 at mile marker 6.7. The selected alternative design will enhance safety for travelers while also considering Madison River environmental impacts. It will include a combination of carving into the rock landscape and re-aligning the roadway.

MDT and MMI are collaborating to move this design to the next phase of engineering work. More information, including an open house, will be scheduled in the future to provide details on this design.

A construction date is unknown and will depend on funding availability.
