What is the purpose of this project?
The purpose of Huntley Area Projects is to enhance safety features and provide capacity for current and future traffic needs on Highway 312, near Huntley. The deteriorating Twelve Mile Creek bridge will be replaced with a wider, more durable structure that adheres to modern design standards and the corresponding roadway improvements to the east and west of Huntley will help ease traffic congestion. These roadway improvements include wider shoulders, new rumble strips and signage, a new two-way left-turn lane between the Twelve Mile Creek bridge and Shepherd Road, and other minor modifications to transition the improvements to the existing roadway.
What is the project timeline?
Huntley Area Projects is currently in the design phase. Phase 1 is expected to open for contractor bids in early 2027, with construction anticipated later that year. How is this project being funded? The Twelve Mile Creek bridge replacement is being funded through the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program Bridge (STPB). The remaining improvements are being funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), a federal aid program intended to help reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries on public roads.
Does this project include improvements to the Yellowstone River Bridge on Old Highway 312 (HWY 312)?
Huntley Area Projects doesn’t include improvements to the Yellowstone River Bridge. However, there are tentative plans to reconstruct the bridge in the future as part of a separate project.
How will construction impact traffic?
During Phase 1 construction, a detour is anticipated to keep traffic off the Twelve Mile Creek bridge while it’s being replaced.
