Construction to place the toe berm is underway and is expected to continue for several weeks, weather and other unforeseen factors permitting. Expect traffic control, including reduced speeds during construction.
Beware of trucks entering and exiting the roadway.
Holiday Schedule
In observance of Labor Day, construction will pause at noon on Friday, August 29 and will resume on Wednesday, September 3.
August 29, 2025
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and M.A. DeAtley Construction, Inc., are placing the toe berm along U.S. Highway 191 near the James Kipp Recreation Area and Fred Robinson Bridge over the Missouri River. This work is expected to continue for several weeks, depending on weather and other unforeseen factors.
Crews have finished installing the cattle guards on Knox Ridge Road and are continuing to install fencing.
Traffic is reduced to 35 mph adjacent to the project site. Please watch for workers and equipment when traveling through the project area.

August 8, 2025
Construction on the shear key embankment along U.S. Highway 191 near the James Kipp Recreation Area and Fred Robinson Bridge over the Missouri River is complete. MDT and M.A. DeAtley Construction, Inc., will begin placing the toe berm this week. This work is expected to continue for several weeks, depending on weather and other unforeseen factors.
Next week, crews will begin installing fencing and a cattle guard on Knox Ridge Road.
Traffic control, including reduced speeds, can be expected during construction.

Crews are continuing to install temporary ditches and haul gravel this week. Construction on the shear key embankment is expected to begin after the holiday, depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen factors. Construction will pause starting Thursday, July 3 at noon in observance of the July 4th holiday; work will resume on Tuesday, July 8.

Initial site work and preparation efforts are progressing. Crews are continuing to haul gravel as well as install temporary ditches.
Construction on the embankment is anticipated to begin after the preparation work is complete, tentatively in early July, depending on weather conditions and other unforeseen factors.

Fergus Electric crews have completed drilling (boring) under the southwest side of the roadway to install underground utilities.
Minimal traffic disruption is anticipated at this time. Please watch for workers and equipment when traveling through the project area. All work is dependent on weather conditions and other unforeseen factors.

May 2, 2025
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner M.A. DeAtley Construction, Inc., are continuing work on the US 191 – Mobridge Slide Repairs project. Currently, site preparation efforts are progressing and include:
- Clearing vegetation
- Hauling and sorting rock fill
- Mobilizing equipment and creating stockpiles
- Installing tools and instrumentation to monitor the landslide movement during construction
Initial site work will continue for the next couple of weeks.
Burning as well as clearing the trees and brush in the project area is complete.

February 5, 2025
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and its partner M.A. DeAtley Construction, Inc., has begun initial site preparation, including dirt work and staging. This work is expected to continue until April.
Minimal traffic disruption is anticipated until April and much of the work will be off-site and not seen from the road.
While traveling through the project site, please be mindful of the speed limit as well as the large trucks and other equipment in the area.
Following site preparation in April, full construction activities are anticipated to begin and continue through the 2025 construction season.
