December 16-20, 2024
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with the city of Kalispell, Schellinger Construction, and DJ&A Engineering, will continue work on the Reserve Drive: Hutton Ranch Road to Whitefish Stage Road project. During the week of December 16, utility work will continue along the project corridor. Work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.
Utility crews will be present on the north side of West Reserve Drive, directly across from West Reserve Plaza at 770 West Reserve Drive. Two-way traffic will continue with traffic candles and barrels present to direct drivers to temporary lane shifts.
Drivers should expect reduced speeds of 35 mph. Please allow for additional travel time. Follow all posted signage and please watch for workers and equipment alongside the road.
Additionally, a public notice has been issued for waterway passage on the Stillwater River where it intersects near West Reserve Drive. Sletten Construction is preparing to begin work soon on a temporary bridge over the Stillwater River.
While crews are working in and near the water, all river users are encouraged to be aware of the river navigation restriction. The restricted opening will be a minimum of 20 feet wide with a 6-foot high clearance and will remain in place through May. Sletten Construction is dedicated to expediting this project and apologizes for any inconvenience it may cause.
We appreciate the Kalispell communities’ partnership in adhering to all signage and flaggers while we work to create a safer roadway. Please remember that fines are doubled when workers are present.
This project includes widening West Reserve Drive between Hutton Ranch Road and Whitefish Stage Road from three to five lanes, including a center turn lane and a shared-use path. The intersections of West Reserve Drive with Hutton Ranch Road and Whitefish Stage Road will feature dedicated turn lanes, new traffic signals, and concrete surfacing. Crews will also replace the Stillwater River Bridge deck to include sidewalks.
This project aims to enhance roadway safety for all users, increase accessibility, and improve traffic flow on West Reserve Drive. MDT appreciates your continued patience and understanding during the construction.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) in partnership with the City of Kalispell, has selected Schellinger Construction and DJ&A Engineering to complete the Reserve Drive: Hutton Ranch Road to Whitefish Stage Road design-build project. A design-build project allows collaborative problem-solving and innovation from the construction company and design engineers, who work jointly throughout the duration of the project to provide a cohesive plan to fit the project timeline and budget. This method has been used for its unique project scope of work, time requirements, deadlines, and in an effort to minimize disruption to traffic. Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, depending on weather and other unforeseen factors.
In 2023, this project was awarded $25 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant (MPDG) to address transportation and traffic challenges. The MPDG Rural grant funds were matched with Montana’s Surface Transportation Program – Primary (STPP) funds in the amount of $13.4 million.
