The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Knife River – Mountain West Division, has begun work on the US 93 West of Whitefish project. The project begins on U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) near the intersection with Mountainside Drive, extending approximately 3 miles west to just past Livermore Flats.
During the week of June 2, crews will conduct earthmoving operations on US 93 between the intersection of Twin Bridges Road and Antler Ridge Road. Planned activities include stripping and hauling topsoil, preparing fill areas where topsoil was removed, and potholing in rock zones to identify underground conditions. Work is scheduled between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m., weather and other unforeseen conditions permitting. Drivers should use caution and anticipate the presence of crews and equipment in the work area.
Travelers can expect reduced speeds and single-lane traffic controlled by pilot vehicles. Delays of up to 15 minutes are possible. Please travel carefully through the work zone.
Planned safety enhancements include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices.
Throughout construction, updates will be distributed via email, webpage, and text message. To receive text updates*, text 93WESTWHITEFISH to 41411.

100 Deadliest Days: A Reminder Stay Safe and Vigilant in Your Summer Travels:
For many Montanans, Memorial Day weekend kicks off the start of summer travel, culminating with Labor Day weekend. Unfortunately, these summer months can also be some of the deadliest on Montana’s roads due to increased motor vehicle crashes. This period is known nationally as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” and has historically represented an increase in crashes and crash fatalities on our roadways due to greater traffic volumes and clear travel conditions that lower drivers’ guards.
Before you make plans to travel this summer, commit to safe, lawful behavior and remain vigilant in sharing Montana’s roadways with all system users. Never operate a motor vehicle while impaired. If you’re driving a vehicle, buckle up before you go and insist your friends and family do the same. Using your seat belt is your best defense against serious injury or death in the event you’re in a crash. This is a Vision Zero Message from the Montana Department of Transportation. A friendly reminder that the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with Knife River – Mountain West Division, will begin work on the US 93 West of Whitefish project the week of May 19, depending on weather and other unforeseen factors. The project begins on U.S. Highway 93 (US 93) near the intersection with Mountainside Drive, extending approximately 3 miles west to just past Livermore Flats.
Crews will begin with grubbing on the west end of the project. Grubbing involves clearing vegetation and surface debris to prepare for future construction phases. Construction activities will take place Monday through Thursday, between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. On Friday, crews will work between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. No construction will occur on Monday, May 26, in observance of Memorial Day.
Travelers can expect traffic control, temporary lane reconfigurations, and reduced speeds through the project area. There may be occasional short delays. Efforts will be made to maintain two-lane traffic whenever possible. However, one-lane traffic controlled by pilot vehicles and/or flaggers may be necessary for some construction activities to ensure safety and mobility in the work zone.
Planned safety enhancements include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices.

March 10-14, 2025
In mid-March, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with T&S Cheff Construction, will begin tree clearing on the US 93 West of Whitefish project. This roadway reconstruction project will occur on US Highway 93 (US 93) in Whitefish, starting near the intersection with Mountainside Drive and continuing west for approximately 3 miles, ending just past Livermore Flats.
Tree clearing is necessary as it creates space for the highway reconstruction. Crews will begin work at the north end of the project corridor, near Livermore Flats, and will move south on US 93. Drivers can expect one-way traffic Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Traffic control will be in place with pilot cars and stop signs. Reduced speeds of 35 mph and delays of up to 15 minutes are expected. Follow all posted signage and watch for workers and equipment.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this spring. All work is dependent on weather and other unforeseen factors.
Due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 (MBTA), MDT has a specific timeframe to complete tree clearing work. MBTA prohibits the take disturbance (including killing, capturing, selling, trading, and transport) of protected migratory bird species. Their nests cannot be disturbed once they are active, which is when birds or eggs are present in the nest. An active nest can halt work and delay the project. MDT schedules activities to avoid this, which means vegetation clearing may start well in advance of construction.
Planned safety enhancements for the US 93 West of Whitefish project include a new driving surface, designated turn lanes, guardrail, wider shoulders, new signage, and a separated shared-use path with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant handrails and detectable warning devices.
This important work will enhance roadway safety features and improve non-motorized accessibility in Whitefish. The goal of this project is to extend the service life of this section of US 93 so that it will continue to serve the community for years to come.
