Interstate 90 (I-90) near Livingston, Montana is prone to strong crosswinds and adverse conditions. The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has established an I-90 detour route through Livingston. MDT staff monitor road and weather data using road weather information system (RWIS) sites. For traveler safety, MDT may determine at any time that certain vehicles, or all traffic must use the detour. The detour temporarily reroutes traffic through Livingston for approximately six miles and back onto I-90. Travelers should expect increased traffic volumes and delays when Interstate traffic is using the detour, especially during peak travel times. At times, MDT may also utilize the detour for incidents on I-90.

When MDT determines certain vehicles or all traffic must use the I-90 detour, the traffic regulations and guidance information is displayed to drivers on dynamic message signs in addition to static signs. This information is also available on MDT’s 511 Travel Information map and mobile apps MDT 511.
