Planning Assistance
With the signing into law of the Safe Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for users (SAFETEA-LU) came an increased focus on highway safety. The law established new resources and opportunities to advance highway safety in a comprehensive, strategic way. SAFETEA-LU requires each state to develop a Strategic Highway Safety Plan that provides state and local transportation and safety agencies a life-saving blueprint to address their top safety issues. Montana's Comprehensive Highway Safety Plan (CHSP) meets this requirement.
MDT has developed a program to provide technical and financial assistance to communities for the development of a transportation safety plan that addresses the safety issues specific to their communities.
The development of a Community Transportation Safety Plan is a community-led planning effort that brings together local safety partners to work together to address their safety issues. The planning process includes analysis of crash data to identify safety issues and review of best practices strategies to find solutions. The overall goal of the program is to reduce the number and severity of serious and fatal crashes within our communities.
