Wildlife Crossings

Wildlife-Sensitive Design

Wildlife-sensitive design seeks to protect animals and promote wildlife habitat connectivity while helping to reduce animal-vehicle conflicts. This type of design makes use of bridge-like structures (overpasses), culvert-like structures (underpasses), fencing, and escape structures. Fencing includes 1) Exclusionary Fence to funnel animals to overpasses and underpasses and 2) Wildlife Friendly Fence which reduces the number of animal/vehicle collisions by reducing the chance of wildlife being trapped in the right-of-way (ROW) and the time wildlife spend in the ROW. Escape structures allow animals to exit the ROW within the limits of the Exclusionary fence.
