Project Overview
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and consultant, DOWL, are designing the Belgrade Intersection Improvements project. The project will enhance intersection safety, improve traffic operations, and meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) design standards.
On Jackrabbit Lane and Amsterdam Road, improvements will include upgrading the existing traffic signals by adding flashing yellow arrows and retroreflective backplates at the following intersections:
- Amsterdam Road and Interstate 90 (I-90) eastbound ramps
- Jackrabbit Lane and I-90 westbound ramps
The Amsterdam Road and Thorpe Road intersection will be reconstructed, and a new traffic signal installed, including flashing yellow arrows and retroreflective backplates. The west leg of the Amsterdam Road and Thorpe Road intersection will also be widened to three lanes to connect to the Amsterdam Road Intersection Improvements project.
At Main Street and Broadway, MDT and the City of Belgrade have selected the mini-roundabout alternative for the intersection. Public input received in the spring of 2026 regarding this design has been incorporated and is shown below. The following illustration depicts a preliminary concept (before input) and the current (with input) design plan:

More information about the mini-roundabout and the process that led to the selection of this alternative is available on the Frequently Asked Questions page.
