In addition to direct outreach to adjacent property owners, two public outreach events were held to present the proposed project:
- An open house was held on October 28, 2019 at the Kalispell City Hall Council Chambers to introduce the project and provide the public an opportunity to meet with MDT, the City of Kalispell and the design team to provide feedback. The feedback from this meeting on a roundabout was mixed with some very opposed to it and others more open to the possibility. Common concerns are summarized below:
- Any improvement will have to address Conrad Drive traffic (westbound) coming up the hill during the winter. If vehicles are required to stop on the hill, they can get stuck or slide back down.
- The intersection traffic pattern is confusing. Driver’s don’t expect westbound traffic to continue through the intersection without stopping.
- The intersection design should support and promote safe and visible pedestrian access.
- It is difficult to see on-coming traffic and predict what a driver is going to do. Sight distances need to be improved.
- People are speeding down Woodland Avenue.
- Cost of the improvements.
- To maintain social distancing practices, while also keeping the community informed about the project, MDT hosted a virtual open house from September 11 to October 9, 2020 to present the preliminary concept design of the roundabout. The community had the opportunity to go online at their convenience to learn more about the project, view the design and provide comments. View the summary and comments from this meeting.
