Beginning Monday, August 10, the intersection of Woodland Avenue with 2nd Street East/Conrad Drive will be closed to all traffic.
The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with the City of Kalispell and contractor Schellinger Construction, will begin construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection.
The intersection will remain closed throughout construction. Closing the area ensures safer, faster, and more efficient work within the limited project area.
Crews aim to complete the bulk of the work this construction season and reopen the intersection to traffic by the end of the year.
Access to nearby properties will be maintained.
Detour and alternate route signage will be in place to guide drivers around the closure.
Detour routes include:
- Traffic traveling south and east of the closure will be directed to use 10th Street East, Willow Glen Drive, and Woodland Park Drive.
- Traffic traveling west and north of the closure will be directed to use 2nd Street East, 4th Avenue East, and East Idaho Street (U.S. Highway 2).
“No Thru Traffic” signs will be posted on College Avenue and Sylvan Drive during construction. Access to these roads is limited to area residents, business patrons, and the Woodland Montessori School community.
Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the project area, including Woodland Avenue, where the City of Kalispell’s Water Main Replacement Project is underway.
Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Although crews will work only during these hours, the intersection will remain closed to traffic until construction is complete.

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT), in partnership with the City of Kalispell and contractor Schellinger Construction, has begun work on improvements at the intersection of Woodland Avenue with 2nd Street East/Conrad Drive. The project will replace the existing intersection with a single-lane roundabout to enhance safety and improve traffic flow.
Currently, crews are relocating utilities and completing other preparatory work before beginning construction of the single-lane roundabout. All work is occurring on the roadside with no impacts on traffic.

There will be no traffic impacts until early August, when the intersection will close and remain closed throughout construction.
Closing the area ensures faster, safer, and more efficient work within the limited project area.
Detour and alternate route signage will be in place to guide drivers around the closure. Access to nearby properties will be maintained.
Construction is expected to be fully completed in the fall of 2027.
Why a Roundabout?
After evaluating options, MDT and the City of Kalispell selected a single-lane roundabout as the best long-term solution to enhance safety and improve traffic flow. Key benefits include:
